Description
Traditional Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), health depends on a balance between the opposing (and complementary) forces of yin and yang. As long as yin and yang remain in balance, body and mind are healthy. If one of the forces is excessively strong or too weak, this leads to an imbalance and illness. The interaction of yin and yang, of cold and warm, of passive and active gives rise to a kind of life energy known as qi. Qi flows along clearly recognizable pathways, the meridians, and connects the regions and parts of the body with each other.
Just like yin and yang, qi must also be in harmony: as long as qi can flow unhindered in sufficient quantities throughout the body, a person is physically and mentally healthy. Diseases are caused by disturbed Qi flows. That is why the main aim of treatment is always to balance yin and yang and ensure free circulation of qi.
Four classic methods of diagnosis
Interrogation
During the questioning, the complaints and medical history are discussed. This form of TCM diagnosis underlines the holistic nature of Chinese medicine. This includes the family and social situation
Observation
The tongue, skin color, body type and the type of movement of the patient are considered.
Listening and smelling
When listening, attention is paid to the voice, breathing, smell and body sounds.
Considering the tongue includes the tongue body and the tongue coating, whereby up to 30 different manifestation possibilities can be distinguished.
Palping
The pulse diagnosis of TCM distinguishes between 25 pulse qualities, which are palpated on both wrists with the index, middle and ring fingers.
This information is used to establish a differentiated pattern of disharmony and the treatment is put together individually.
